What Kind of Career I Want and Why
Looking forward into the future there are multiple careers that I would be interested in. Variety is one of the things I love about communications since it can give me multiple options of jobs to choose from. My “dream job” per se is to work in the film industry. I would like to work behind or infront of the camera, maybe interviewing people. Realistically I think that promotion and marketing in the film industry would be a fast paced and fun environment. Another job that I would be interested in is media management for a company or person. Creating and maintaining an aesthetic and voice for a brand, company or person would be a fun challenge to tackle. An additional job that I would be interested in is to work in public relations for a company. This would be an intense job especially for a brand if facing backlash, however, it would always keep me on my feet.
My Relevant Skills to Help me Achieve Success in this Field
Over the past four years at TRU I have gained multiple skills that can be applied to succeed in the communications field. If I were to get a job interviewing people my journalism classes have helped me ask important questions that will answer the publics’ questions. If I wanted to work behind the camera with something like directing I have taken multiple film and video production classes that will lead me to success. If I were to go into the promotion and marketing side of communications I am able to use my analyzing skills to see what the target audience wants to see. For media management I would use my knowledge from classes where we would analyze and audit brands of what their core messages were and how it can be seen throughout the platforms that they would use. For public relations I would revert to case studies I have done in the past on how to create successful apologies and learning from other companies mistakes on how to make a better reputation.
How ILO has encouraged my Work
The four pieces that I chose for my portfolio showcases my institutional learning outcomes (ILO) by relating to connection, engagement, exploration and local-to-global content. My social media audit of Bright Eye Brewing showcases the connection branch of ILO since the paper contains graphs and example images that help convey my analysis to a range of audiences. It also shows effective leadership if the brewery were to go through with my suggestions. My short film and script demonstrates the engagement part of ILO because I can alway keep learning new filming or editing techniques and having the social responsibility to film something that has meaning. My white paper and infographic of Air Canada exhibits the exploration section of ILO by applying critical thinking and investigation on how they can regain revenue loss from the pandemic. My article on the Kamloops Film Society’s 50th anniversary exemplifies the local-to-global portion of the ILO as it advertises different film festivals that focus on cultures.
